What is the talcum powder lawsuit about?

While they outwardly denied the talcum powder ovarian cancer risk, for decades, company officials have known of the research linking baby powder to ovarian cancer. J&J made the decision not to warn women that talcum powder could cause ovarian cancer when used on the genital areas for personal hygiene.

Since 1971, there have been more than 20 studies linking talcum powder to ovarian cancer.

While talc is a natural mineral, it is very difficult for the body to remove the particles and, as a result, inflammation may occur and cancerous tumors may form.

Despite the possible link to cancer, talc powder manufacturers have not placed warnings about this risk on their products.

Talc is a soft, naturally occurring mineral made of oxygen, silicon, and magnesium. After talc is mined and processed, the resulting fine powder is used in a variety of cosmetic products.

When used near the genitals, talc powder can travel to the ovaries and become embedded in the ovarian tissue.

According to an article the New York Times, J&J spent decades trying to keep this negative information from reaching the public.

What is the link between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer?

According to research, women who regularly use or have used baby powder – also known as talcum powder – in their genital area may be at an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. Talcum powder is made up of tiny particles of the mineral called “talc”. Dusting female genitals with talcum powder creates an environment where minuscule talc particles can travel through the reproductive system and become embedded within the ovaries. Wherever the particles settle within the body, a tumor may grow. Clinical studies have found cancerous ovarian tumors with traces of talc.

Additionally, some talc products were contaminated with asbestos and then sold without warning labels. Talc is often found in nature alongside a similar mineral – asbestos – which is known to be a carcinogen. Companies allegedly knew asbestos was detected in its talc products as early as the 1970’s but failed to warn consumers of the risks. Medical researchers have linked the use of contaminated talcum powder to ovarian cancer in women.

Has the FDA banned or recalled the use of talcum powder in consumer products?

Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recalled or banned talcum powder products, despite the fact that studies suggest a link between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer. The FDA has also not required talc products to disclose a cancer warning to consumers. The FDA’s most recent 2019 study found 9 positive asbestos samples in current talc-containing cosmetic products and 43 negative. While asbestos is a known carcinogen, The World Health Organization (WHO) also classifies talc without asbestos as a possible carcinogen. Talc is still an FDA approved ingredient used in many cosmetics, from baby powder to blush. The FDA says that they will conduct another talc sampling study throughout 2020, with results expected to be released in early 2021.
